Granted Second Growth status in the 1855 Medoc Classification, Brane-Cantenac is a Margaux property with a history stretching back to the early 18th century. Currently owned by Henri Lurton, the Brance Cantenac philosophy is very much a hands-on one, and the wines are traditionally harvested, vinified and matured. As is typical of the Left Bank the 75-hectare vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Less typical is a very small Carmenere planting, which was used in the Grand Vin for the first time in 2011. Around 25 percent of the vineyard is farmed organically and there are plans to improve this ratio further. There is a second wine as well – Baron de Brane – made from younger vines and named after the 19th-century owner of the chateau.
Tasting notes:
The 2019 Margaux de Brane is bright, floral and perfumed, all of which make it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. The vibrancy of the fruit in this Merlot-driven red is especially alluring. In 2019 the Brane is an absolute delight.
