Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from organically farmed & BioGro certified grapes in the family owned Waihopai Valley Vineyard, in New Zealand’s Marlborough winegrowing region. The vineyard is now fully certified BioGro status and as such is grown without the use of synthetic, fungicides, insecticides or herbicides. The vines are cultivated under vine which forces the roots to delve down into the soil to extract moisture & nutrients from the sub-soil resulting in more complex flavours in the fruit. One unexpected bonus is that the vines are now less likely to take up water after rain & therefore remain healthy for longer during the season. The 2013 growing season was a dream to manage. A cool spring initially delayed the start of the growing season and cool weather over flowering resulted in a reduced fruit set. Then the El Nino that we had been waiting for finally kicked in over summer and we enjoyed one of the best summers in years. This heat accelerated vine development which meant we had to keep a very close eye on flavour development as the fruit ripened.
Taste: This wine, sourced from organically grown grapes and made by German ex-pats, shows plenty of waxy lemon, pineapple rind and green bean characters, with white pepper and mint aromas adding complexity. The palate is downright opulent—textural weight is balanced by tingly acidity with a salty finish. Christina Pickard
