Katnook Estate is a well-regarded wine estate located in the South Australian region of Coonawarra. It is well known for its prime location, lying in the heart of Coonawarra’s famous terra rossa soils – a long strip of red, loamy, fertile soil that overlays chalky limestone. In line with other producers in the region, Katnook makes the majority of its wines from Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Prodigy Shiraz is crafted from the vintages where superior quality is achieved. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, it is a seamless blend of intense fruit and extended oak maturation. The first vintage of this wine was in 1997 – it won Australia’s most prestigious trophy, the Jimmy Watson.
Prodigy Shiraz was one of 65 wines listed in the ‘Excellent’ category of the Langton’s VI, Classification of Australian Wine.
Matured for 39 months in a combination of American and French oak barriques of which 36% were new. Intense varietal characteristics of rich plum, red berries and spice are beautifully integrated with complex oak maturation notes and lingering, fine grained tannins. Cellared correctly, Prodigy will age gracefully up to 20 years.
Taste: Katnook’s Prodigy Shiraz is full bodied and creamy in texture, combining authentic Shiraz aromas and flavors with easy-drinking, open-knit appeal. Scents of tar, black olive and blackberry give way to flavors of red peppercorn and mixed berry.
