The Louis Roederer Cristal Brut 2012 is as significant as the Rosé, as it marks the very first vintage where the standard (“Blanc”) Cristal was produced from 100% biodynamically farmed estate fruit
While the Rosé is about power and “infusion,” the 2012 Brut is a masterclass in chalky precision and energy.
Tasting Profile
-
Appearance: A brilliant, deep yellow-gold with a very fine, steady bead of bubbles.
-
Nose: It is simultaneously “powdery” and rich. You’ll find initial notes of candied orange, white peach, and mirabelle plum, which then evolve into complex scents of roasted hazelnut, Madagascar vanilla, and a smoky, toasted brioche character.
-
Palate: The texture is often described as “silky” and “mouth-coating.” Because 2012 was a great year for Pinot Noir, the wine has a significant mid-palate weight, but it is immediately balanced by a sharp, vibrating salinity and a laser-like chalky freshness.
The 2012 Brut is a “critics’ darling,” often scoring 97–99 points.
William Kelley (Wine Advocate): Called it “incisive and searingly chalky,” noting it is more “muscular” than the legendary 2008.
Antonio Galloni (Vinous): Described it as “radiant and luscious” with “exotic beauty.”
